Lightning rumour

Eklund claims that Tampa Bay is in "heavy" discussions with the Habs regarding José Theodore. It has been rumoured before that the Canadiens have been interested in Brad Richards, so this is not completely out of the blue. The Lightning are looking for goaltending help, and it's quite clear that Theodore needs a change of scenery. You don't let in 5 goals and get pulled a third time without something happening. 18 goals against on his last 63 shots faced. Montreal will have to absorb some of Theodore's hefty salary, but I believe this was his very final straw.

Under the terms of the new CBA, teams can no longer absorb portions of a traded player's salary. The Canadiens therefore cannot "eat" part of Theodore's contract if they trade him. That big contract plus Theodore's crappy play makes him almost untradeable, and there's no way the Lightning will move Richards for Theodore. That's a fantasy. Just wanted to pass that along.

Do you mean cap space, or salary in general? I understand that a team can't absorb salary for the sake of the cap, but I was under the impression the Habs are still allowed to pay some of his contract for the Lightning.

Tampa is interested in a high-calibre goalie, and they might very well be willing to take the risk with Theodore, especially given Lecavalier and St. Louis' influence. Yes, a Richards-for-Theodore trade may seem farfetched, but don't dismiss it that quickly.
